Mutts & Munchkins
Kids helping dogs helping kids
The Mutts & Munchkins program teaches young people (grades 3 and up) how to do basic obedience with your family dog, or, if you don't have one, with a carefully chosen loaner dog..
"Research indicates that dog training and other animal programs facilitate behavioral control for impulsive young people. They help develop emotional regulation, self-awareness and skill development further resulting in improved social skills and empathy" (Lead The Way, 2007).
Your child will develop important skills as they learn to be a junior dog trainer:
- Improve social skills as they learn to understand the dogs body language and non-verbal cues.
- Learn strategies for communicating effectively to help the dog understand commands without confusion.
- Improve their ability to sequence events and break down large tasks into smaller pieces to make it easier for the dog to learn.
- Practice patience and problem solving as they search for ways to help the dog learn new behaviors or change old ones.
- Improve self-esteem improves as they gain a sense of control and confidence.
- Oh, and they have fun!
Visiting Dog Program, aka..So, You Think You Want a Dog
“Mom! When can we get a dog? I promise I'll take care of it and walk it and feed it and pick up the poop. Can we get one, can we get one? PLEEEASE!!!!!!"
What parent hasn't heard this before? Well, if now is NOT the right time to take on the responsibility of a dog, but your child keeps begging...this is the program for you!
Using a visiting dog we will have your child experience the various responsibilities of properly caring for a dog. Just because you can't have a dog doesn't mean your child shouldn't have opportunities to experience the joys, and challenges, of caring for a pup.
